Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

... apply documentation and analysis methods for buildings, ensembles and their local environment. They are taught deformation-accurate building documentation ranging from analogue recording to high-tech applications (including photogrammetry and 3D laser scanning). Analytical building investigation as well as efficient literature and archive research for the relevant context are taught as a basis, not only for archaeological building research, but also for planning and building in a historical context.

... to produce a comprehensive study of the history of change and development of a building or architectural ensemble or of selected construction phenomena. Furthermore, students will be able to reconstruct construction processes and planning intentions in the context of cultural and architectural history of a specific historical period.

... to recognise and discuss general and building-specific aspects of the construction history as a reflection of the potential and innovation in the studied buildings.

... to work scientifically, to define a research question, to develop and test a hypothesis and to present their results orally and in writing.

Subject of course

Genazzano Eindrücke

Drawing: "Colonna Castle at Genazzano, Italy" by Théodore Caruelle d'Aligny, 1835.
Photography: Impressions of Genazzano by Lukas Stampfer, 2022.

- "Castello Colonna" in Genazzano -

We will study the "Reception of Antiquity" in the Italian Renaissance in the Modul History of Architecture and Building Archaeology in the winter semester 2023. The building survey object „Castello Colonna“ in Genazzano, the surrounding architectural context and the nearby Nymphaeum by Bramante will be the focus.

Starting from the building survey on site, we will look at the changes, transformations and the settings of the Castello within the historically evolved settlement structure. The focus of the analysis will be on the relationship to the architecture of antiquity, the use of the antique language of expression and the actual reuse of antique building elements.

General content of the module:

Building research is the reconstruction of the design idea inherent in a building, as a reaction to the cultural and social context of its creation, and the analysis and understanding of it. It is a form of reversed design process and at the same time a way of critically discussing and evaluating the building and its unique architectural solutions. Depending on the historic "building task", criteria such as current relevance, use qualities, design coherence, sustainability, etc. are analised.

We will discuss the methods of building research and their significance for the activities preceding construction in planning (expert opinions, documentation, historical evaluation, coordination) and the implementation of interventions in the existing buildings (securing and preservation, conversion, rehabilitation, restoration, reconstruction) as well as for the scientific observation of architecture following construction.

In construction documentation, we will be primarily concerned with construction details and historical construction site logistics. In the building analysis, there will be an extensive examination of the relevant facts of architectural history on topics such as "building and functional typologies", "reception of antiquity", "historical contextualisation" and much more.
