The principles of underground excavation design are given. Different design methods will be discussed e.g. conventional tunneling, mechanical tunneling. The advantages and disadvantages of different methods are compared. In order to design underground openings analytical and numerical solutions are presented. The effect of rock bolts, shotcrete lining, steel arches are discussed and analytical and numerical solutions are given. The theoretical knowledge is then used to solve practical examples.
Tunneling methods, material behaviour, shape/orientation, theoretical background, rock classification, conventional tunneling, mechanical tunneling, montoring, claims
