Subject of course

Travnik is a town in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is situated about 100 km northwest of the capital Sarajevo in the Lašva valley.

The city looks back on an eventful history. In the 12th century the Travnik region became part of the medieval Bosnian state. Today the old town of Travnik is the best preserved testimony of this period.

During the Turkish occupation Travnik developed into a military centre and garrison town.  For almost 150 years (1699-1851) with minor interruptions the Bosnian city was the residence of the Wesir of the Sultan. Thanks to its administrative role the town developed into a strong craft and trade centre.

At the beginning of the 19th century, France and Austria opened their consulates here, making Travnik the first diplomatic centre in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city became a crossroads of paths and interests between East and West, a place of direct contact between two different civilizations.

During this time the town prospered and a number of buildings were erected (mosques, a bath, Koran schools, shops, inns, clock towers and other sacral, commercial and secular buildings).

The transfer of the Wesir’s seat from Travnik to Sarajevo in 1851 stopped this development.

It was only under Austro-Hungarian administration that the town was revived and became an industrial centre. This period also clearly left its mark on Travnik's cityscape, which is the focus of the project mentioned at the beginning.

Within the course the urban fabric of the city will be analysed and ideas on various research topics in the light of current developments will be developed.
