This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2017W, VU, 2.0h, 3.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Aim of course

This course will explain how to utilize (a) microstructured surfaces and (b) microelectronic device surfaces as functional interfaces in biomedical instrumentation. The interface between biomaterials and microelectronics is one of the modern frontiers in science. The clash of ionic and electronic conduction mechanisms and the issue of biocompatibility are challenges for biomedical signal recording and processing. An overview over functional biomedical interfaces and their applications in biomedical instrumentation will be given.

Subject of course

Micro- & nanofabrication methods and materials involved, direct biomedical-interfacing with microstructured surfaces, direct biomedical-interfacing with microelectronic devices, biomedical interfacing with microelectrodes - bioimpedance spectroscopy, biomedical interfacing with field effect devices - ISFET; EOSFET, neuronal Interface, biomedical application of operation amplifiers.

The theoretical know-how gained during the lecture  (5 lectures a 2 hr) will be deepend by a 1-day practical lab exercise. Due to the intensive interaction with students in 2016 only 5 Groups a 3 students will be available.
