Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • explain the basic concepts to quantify and reduce the problem of trauma especially related to traffic accidents.
  • discuss research methods used in injury biomechanics and their limitations.
  • explain injury mechanisms and the related injury tolerances for the most vulnerable body parts.
  • explain background, capabilities and limitations of experimental and numerical tools for safety assessment and design.

Subject of course

  • Introduction and motivation (epidemiology of injuries; Terminology in injury biomechanics)
  • General basics on research methods in injury biomechanics
  • Specific findings for major body parts (head, neck/spine, thorax, extremities)
  • Mechanical human body models (dummies)
  • Mathematical human body models (simulation)

Teaching methods

Lecture supported by digital presentations; discussion of case studies.

Mode of examination

Written

Additional information

Depending on possible restrictions due to the pandemic the format of the lecture can be changed to "hybrid" and/or "online".
