Urban Connectivity
This semester (2023W) the course "Subjective Spaces / Spatial Utopias" takes the theme of "Urban Connectivity" as an opportunity to plan visionary project ideas at selected locations in Vienna and at important infrastructure intersections, in order to improve urban accessibility and cohesion using the concept of the "15-minute city" as an example. The designs will be developed as comic drawings.
Cargo bikes, E-bikes, and a continuing trend towards decentralized goods delivery are transforming public spaces and shifting the focus of public life from consumption centers to the neighborhoods ("Grätzel"), its meeting zones, and its non-commercial areas. The changing mobility landscape presents new perspectives towards increased environmental and climate protection, as well as new opportunities to enhance the quality of urban spaces. The connection between neighborhoods becomes more important. Infrastructure such as heavily trafficked roads, subway or train tracks become painfully visible as divisive elements that cut through the city fabric and impediment inter-neighborhood connectivity.
Within the course "Subjective Spaces/Space Utopias," ideas are being sought to improve or restore urban connectivity between different areas of the city. The aim is to enhance convenient accessibility between districts on foot or by bicycle. The creation of attractive community centers at key intersections of districts and neighborhoods is intended to promote social interaction and sustainable mobility, while also reclaiming "lost" infrastructure space for society.
During the course "Subjective space / Spatial utopia" we search for ideas to repair current undesirable developments and stop future misdemeanors from happening. The projects should be developed as short stories and be presented as immersive comics in different drawing techniques and styles. The results we are looking for are individual designs and ideas that show your critical, creative and innovative thoughts on the subject "land consumption".
The medium of the comic offers the possibility to us to create a more immersive and intimate experience of our projects.
During the lectures relevant works in architecture and as well in comic literature will be presented. An overview over the medium comic will be given, drawing techniques, styles and different types of storyboard will be introduced. Spatial awareness and the use of perspective is essential for our final works.
