Topic: Berretta del Prete - Parco Archeologico Dell` Appia Antica, Rom
In winter semester 2017/18, the module ¿History of Architecture and Building Archaeology¿ will focus on ancient and late Roman masonry techniques. In particular, a tomb building dating to the late 3rd / early 4th century AD, the Berretta del Prete, near Via Appia Antica in Rome is to be investigated. The well-preserved central rotunda of the building has a diameter of 12.50 m and is covered by a dome. Other related building structures have been documented by archaeological studies, but they are not visible on the surface. Thus, the mausoleum was originally to enter via a main entrance from the street through a corridor. Around the central rotunda was a barrel-vaulted room.
In addition to building survey, the architectural analysis and documentation of the Berretta del Prete will focus on different Roman masonry techniques and its production process. Corresponding questions are to be investigated and verified using the methods of innovative building survey technology. For a comparative study and classification of the features, other ancient and late Roman buildings in Rome will be visited during the excursion.
