Das Institut für Geotechnik ist ein Teil der Fakultät für Bauingenieurwesen der TU Wien. Der Personalstand ist dzt. bei 19 (Geologen, Bauingenieure, Laboranten, Administration).

Vernetztes Denken ist gefragt bei unterirdischem Bauen. Daher sind Querverbindungen zu anderen Fachgebieten nötig: Hydrologie, Bauwirtschaft, Kalkulation, Biologie, Chemie, Geophysik usw.

Zwei Forschungsbereiche werden von je einem Univ.-Prof geführt:

- Forschungsbereich Ingenieurgeologie: Forschung in Ingenieurgeologie i.w.S. sowie Lehre für Bauingenieur-StudentInnen (Bachelor, Master- und Dr.).
Hauptforschungsgebiete sind Hang- bzw. Böschungsstabilitäten, Baugrunderkundung, ingenieurgeologische Kartierung, angewandte Felsmechanik, Umweltgeologie, volumetrische und numerische Modellierung, Tunnelbau (v.a. felsmechanische,hydrogeologische und injektionstechnische Aspekte), technische Petrografie (speziell Erhaltung und Sanierung von Natursteinbauten), Hydrogeologie und Geomorphologie.

- Forschungebereich Bodenmechanik: "Boden" in der Natur und im Labor, Bearbeitung und geotechnische Kennzeichnung von Boden- und Felsproben, geotechnische Baugrundcharakterisierung, Berechnung von Grundungsmaßnahmen. Baugrundverbesserung, geothermale Energie.

Es besteht generell ein zunehmender Bedarf an geotechnischen Expertisen wegen des hohen Bewusstseins bezogen auf Umweltschutz resp. den Notwendigkeiten von Baumassnahmen in zunehmend schwierigerem Untergrund. Naturkatastrophen zeigen die Verwundbarkeit der menschlichen Gemeinschaft gegenüber Naturkatastrophen. Die Evaluierung, Bemessung und das Management von geogenen Gefahren und Risken, speziell in Gebirgsgegenden, werden dadurch ein wichtiges Thema geotechnischer Forschung.

The Institute of Geotechnics is part of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Vienna; its staff consists of 19 persons (geologists, civil engineers and administrative staff).

Network thinking is necessary to cover the demand in subterraneous construction. Therefore interconnections to hydrology, construction management and cost calculation, biology, Chemistry, Geophysics and so on are necessary.

Two centers are led by a full professor each:
- Center of Engineering geology: research on engineering geology in general and the teaching of these aspects for students of civil engineering (undergraduate and advanced courses).
The main research activities concern slope stability and mass movements, site exploration and engineering geological mapping, applied rock mechanics, environmental geology volumetric and numeric modelling, tunnelling (rock mechanic, hydrogeological and grouting aspects), technical petrography (especially the preservation and conservation of material cultural heritage), hydrogeology and geomorphology.

- Center for Soil mechanics and ground engineering:
soil in nature and in the lab, geotechnical characterisation of soil and rock, calculation of foundation construction, ground improvement, geothermal energy

There is an overall increasing demand in geotechnic expertise resulting from the high public awareness concerning environmental protection and with the needs for construction in increasingly difficult terrain. Natural catastrophic events again and again show the vulnerability of the human society from natural disasters. The evaluation, assessment and management of geo-related hazards and risks, in particular in mountainous areas, have become a major topics of geotechnical research.
