B (ELTREC) Establishing a Landfill Training and Research Centre to Promote a better Operation of Landfills in Indonesia

01.07.2011 - 31.12.2012
Assigned research project
Waste management in Indonesia is currently at the beginning of a transition phase from open dumping to sophisticated landfills (engineered and/or sanitary landfills). New waste legislation demands municipalities to construct and operate new landfill within the next decade. Hence, information and knowledge how to construct and operate sanitary landfills (under tropical conditions considering the waste generated and the economic capacity) have to be provided for local stakeholders. Thus, the objective of the present project is to establish a research and training center for sanitary landfilling in Indonesia. Based on existing experience guidelines for an appropriate management of landfills in tropical zones should be developed. In addition local experts should be trained in landfill operation and an international conference focusing on appropriate landfill management in South East Asia will be organized. The project will be conducted in cooperation between TU Vienna, Syiah Kuala University and the Sanitation and Park Department, Banda Aceh Municipality in Indonesia.
