Optimizing the use of the road network is one of the key challenges for several intelligent transport system (ITS) projects. Mechanisms for automatic detection of congestions and accidents have been shown to be effective for improving the efficiency of the traffic flows, especially when combined with real-time traffic and travel information (RTTI) systems that assist drivers in choosing appropriate routes and avoiding congestions. Such a framework would require efficient means to collect information about road traffic status, optimized algorithms for processing the data, and flexible means to inform the final users. Road traffic data collection is currently based on short-range sensors placed alongside the road, cameras with video detection, and emergency calls from drivers. Such data are processed by the traffic control centers in the road operator domain by involving human operators’ interaction. Finally, information about the road status is extracted and forwarded to third parties for the final dissemination to the drivers via FM radio or other communication means. While this approach has been in place since few decades, it does not comply with the requirements of an efficient real-time framework that covers large road networks in their entirety. Due to the deployment costs, sensors are usually placed only in important traffic junctions, thus traffic estimation is limited to certain areas.
