Algae - A Future Renewable Energy Source? - Current Status and Future Perspectives for the Austrian Energy System

01.05.2010 - 31.01.2012
Research funding project
The project will describe and evaluate the future potential for algae to contribute to Austrian energy and climate objectives. Algal production systems will be evaluated and scenarios for algae use in the Austrian energy system will be outlined. The algae-based scenarios will be assessed in technical, economical, and environmental aspects to examine possibilities of energy substitution and of greenhouse gas reduction for the years 2020 and 2050. The goals will be: identification of promising technologies for algae production and use; identification of necessary research areas and the chance for Austrian research and industry; and the possible role of algae in the Austrian energy system providing transportation biofuels, electricity, heat and co-products.
