Groundwater Resource Systems Vienna
10.05.2010 - 30.06.2017
Assigned research project
The goal of the project is to evaluate and further develop methods and approaches for the sustainable use and management of ground water resources for water supply. Emphasis is given to the following issues including elements of i) surface water quality at river/backwater systems and their methods of investigation, ii) infiltration from river/backwater systems and their methods of investigation, iii) resulting groundwater quality and approaches for predictive modelling, and, iv) respective ground water usage and provision of tools for sustainable management. An interdisciplinary team was assembled in order to tackle these complex issues. Within the hydrological discipline methods for the measurement and investigation of the fate and transport of microbes will be applied and further developed. In the field of microbial water quality analysis, methods for the analysis and characterisation of faecal pollution will be the focus. Standard and alternative indication systems will be evaluate, developed and applied. Both bacterial and viral tracers will be applied. Besides, emphasis will also be given to quantitative microbial risk assessment. In addition, biostability of ground water will also be a research issue. Finally microbial and toxicological risk will be compared. The 8 year¿s research project will be realised as associated project within the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF) funded Vienna Doctoral Programme on Water Resource Systems (www.waterresources.at).
