Optimization of energetic efficiency in rail vehicles

01.03.2010 - 30.09.2011
Research funding project
Topic of the project is the optimization of efficiency of energy consumption of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning appliances (HVAC) in rail vehicles. At the same time comfort parameters should be kept at current levels. Using measurements at the climatic wind tunnel in Vienna and operational measurements at the metro-vehicle ULF as well as simulations, the relations between operational parameters, environmental influence, vehicle construction and HAVC appliances will be described and evaluated. Based on this knowledge strategies for redesigning the vehicle and for operation will be developed. These strategies aim at a significant reduction in energy consumption without sacrificing comfort. Additionally, methodologies for optimizing the efficiency of components will be established (measurement standards, simulation software).
