SCALE-VS: Research on the Scalability and Confluence of Scientific Visualization and Interactive Segmentation

Recent advancements in volumetric data acquisition in scientific computing such as the use of Electron Microscopy in neuroscience have created fundamentally new challenges for visualization and segmentation. The resulting raw data are in the petascale range (10^12), which, together with derived data computed in addition to the acquired data, cannot be handled by simply extending existing approaches and algorithms. These developments require new fundamental research on scalable methods, both from a technical point of view, i.e., handling, processing, visualizing these data, as well as a user-centered point of view, i.e., actually working with, segmenting, and analyzing these data. Scalability is also a fundamental aspect in the exploration of the high-dimensional parameter spaces of segmentation algorithms, which would allow bridging the gap between visualization and segmentation, exploiting user knowledge in a visual approach. The basic research performed in the scope of the proposed project will contribute significantly toward creating expertise on handling these challenges in the Vienna area.
