Sigma Nought Statistics over Land

01.01.2009 - 31.05.2011
Assigned research project
To ensure the continuity of the C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) instruments on board of the satellites ERS-1, ERS-2 and ENVISAT, the European Space Agency (ESA) currently prepares for the launch of the Sentinel-1 mission. Launch of the first Sentinel-1 satellite is foreseen for the year 2012. To evaluate performance requirements of the SAR instrument, statistics of the C-band backscattering coefficient (sigma-nought) over land surfaces are needed. The objectives of the proposed project are to create a C-band backscatter signature data base using ENVISAT ASAR measurements and to produce a global C-band dataset as a basis for simulating Sentinel-1 responses.
