Oxidation of Nanomaterials
01.01.2004 - 31.03.2007
Research funding project
Understanding the oxidation of surfaces, interfaces and nanoparticles under ambient oxygen pressures and the technical ability to atomically control the oxidation of nanomaterials under industrially and environmentally relevant conditions are considered to be important milestones for future nanotechnologies. Substantial effort has been devoted to understanding oxidation fundamentals within the past few decades using pioneering-type experiments under highly idealized conditions, such as very low oxygen pressures (10-6 mbar), and idealized, model material systems (single crystals). The main mission of NanO2 is to bridge this pressure- and materials-gap in the understanding of the interaction of oxygen with metallic nanoparticles, so that industrially relevant conditions are scientifically understood. NanO2 will overcome these barriers by systematically investigating the size and shape dependence of high pressure oxidation of nanomaterials in a novel approach: surface sensitive in-situ techniques for high oxygen pressures and temperatures and ab-initio thermodynamic calculations will be combined in a unique, revolutionary way to tailor the nanomaterial shape and to predict their performance in industrial processes and under environmental conditions.
