Commissariat Energie Atomique - Thesis Stummer

Research funding project
Experimental Device for Transmutation Studies at the Jules Horowitz Reactor Because the for transmutation studies preferred fast reactors (critical and subcritical) will not be available for at least the next decade, the most has to be made out of the available thermal MTRs. During this PhD the feasibility and limits of such research in MTRs is to be investigated and if feasible preliminary experiment designs for the Jules Horowitz reactor should be done up to mock up test without irradiation. In order to define guide lines for the experimental program the student should first become acquainted with the theoretical background of the transmutation of minor actinides and then perform comparative transmutation studies for an equilibrium fuel cycle by modifying an existing code. In the next step the already existing and qualified set of 3D codes for neutron transport, gamma heating and thermo-hydraulic studies at the Jules Horowitz reactor must be mastered in order to proceed to final step of actually designing the necessary core components for the experiments and to define their impact on core behaviour. The first two steps are expected to take a bit over a year with the remainder of the three years being reserved for the design studies. The work is to be carried out on site at CEA Cadarache, France.
