Potential of geothermic energy in Austria

01.06.2008 - 30.06.2011
Forschungsförderungsprojekt
Currently, key words, like usage of geothermal energy, renewable energy, passive house technology and energy efficiency are applied everywhere. The reasoning behind is the pursuit of an efficient and sustainable utilization of energy reserves for heating as well as air-conditioning of houses. During the last years, the Austrian-wide total potential of several forms of energy has been assessed, providing the basis for energy- and climate policy related decisions. Particularly, the area of renewable energy gained from bio-mass (bio-mass heating plants, pellets, bio-fuels, etc.), sun-energy and wind-energy has been both studied and promoted widely. The theoretically existing energy potential of geothermometry for energy support within facility management is significantly higher than that of other energy sources, however, it has never been included and analysed in an Austrian-wide study as of now. As a result, the potential of geothermometry, which¿s exploitation as the only one, does not infringe other energy sources or make use of natural resources (such as forests, arable areas or landscape), has been underrepresented in relevant statistics. According to a, from an economic perspective optimized energy policy, a comparable data basis should be used for the evaluation of measures in the area of energy policy. Especially for the building industry, which constructs a large quantity of office and residential buildings according to latest standards of heating and air-conditioning, huge potential for the decrease of energy consumption and thus for minimising CO2 emissions due to outdated heating systems is obtainable. Solely by means of collaboration between specialised disciplines, participating in the filed of construction and infrastructure, can a complete gathering of data about the potential in Austria be achieved. The single specialized disciplines encompass detailed knowledge about the possibilities of energy-efficient management, an inclusive study about Austrian potential, nevertheless, must be based on interdisciplinary cooperation. An analysis of the potential energy supply from geothermometry by a consortium comprising geo-sciences, systems engineering, facility management, spatial planners, applied economics, infrastructure management, structural engineering, as well as construction material industry, represents the optimal team for the elaboration of a scientific study leading to a sound description of the problem. The requirements of the Austrian government programme prove a national interest in the results of the study.
