Innovative ICT System for non-hierarchical networked production

20.01.2008 - 05.10.2008
Forschungsförderungsprojekt
The project intends to assist organizations (especially SME) with the self dependent, decentralized and real-time decision making in non-hierarchical production networks. By means of an innovative ICT System each network member should be able to self dependently plan its capacities under consideration of e.g. the down times, risk and quality aspects of its partners. The system will consist of the 4 interdependent modules - Performance Management, - Risk Management (in supply chains), - Tracking and Tracing and - Condition Monitoring. In order to develop a practicable solution, the involvement of industry partners and the testing of the prototype under realistic conditions is of utmost importance. The project will use the European furniture industry as a test-bed for the planned solution. According to the European Commission the European furniture industry accounts for about half of the world's furniture production with a production value of about 82 billion Euros. It is highly labour-intensive and is often located in non-metropolitan areas, therefore being of special importance to the regional economy. Unlike so many other production industries, the European furniture industry still is able to defend their position against competition from low-wage countries. This is mainly done by superior product design with a high degree of customisation in combination with a high level of automation and superior logistics. Although the industry consists mainly of SME, there also exist some major brand name manufacturers, with extensive supplier networks. The planned consortium will use existing production networks in the furniture industry in order to determine the requirements for such a system but also as test ground for the prototype. It is planned to involve two brand-name manufacturers and 3-5 suppliers of parts and machinery (SME). Furthermore, the final ICT-system should also be used in assisting the establishment of a new production network (cluster) in the furniture industry in an EU-candidate country, namely Macedonia. Ziel des geplanten RP7 Projektes: The planned ICT system should foster the multilateral exchange of data and information in non-hierarchical networked production (syntactic, semantic and pragmatic communication) and assist in the de-centralized decision making. The system should assist existing production networks to become more reliable and efficient and furthermore help with the process of establishing new production networks or industrial clusters.
