Mechatronic Concepts for Structural Health Monitoring of CE-Structures

The process of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) involves the observation of a structure over time using periodically sampled dynamic response measurements from an array of sensors. The extraction of damage-sensitive features from these measurements and the corresponding statistical analysis is then used to determine the current state of system health. After extreme events, such as earthquakes or severe wind loading, SHM is used for rapid condition screening to provide reliable information regarding the integrity of the structure. Due to the constant aging of CE-structures, the request of structural reliability evaluation and remaining life assessment is of major importance. Thus, SHM represents an innovative approach for the conservation in safety conditions of bridges and buildings. Within the applied project two types of structures will be considered: (1) Bridges - static and dynamic deformation monitoring by means of piezoelectric and fiber-optic systems - development of Weight-In-Motion (WIM) systems for detecting heavy motor trucks (2) Masonry Structures - traffic induced vibrations of (historical) arches
