Characterization of SiCf/SiC composites: pore structure study by means of neutron small angle scattering and neutron radiography
01.01.2008 - 30.06.2010
Research funding project
In 2008 small angle neutron scattering and neutron radiography/tomography methods will be used to investigate the micro- and nanoporosity of the composites and the influence of irradiation on their properties will be investigated. Mechanical strengths and conductivity experiments will be done as well. The highest material radiation damage, which has to be determined to enhance the lifetime of the first wall material, occurs in the first wall because it is exposed to the highest neutron and charged particle currents. Therefore, the DPA and helium gas production for the SiCf/SiC composite will be calculated using MCNP. Since sample irradiation experiments have been preformed at the SINQ neutron spallation source in Villigen/Switzerland with neutron energies up to 500 MeV the related data have to be implemented. In order to get estimates about the radiation damage parameters at 14 MeV neutrons a careful interpolation between low and high energy irradiaton effects has to be done. The gas permeability of SiCf/SiC samples will be investigated for differently coated samples and Tyranno SA based SiCf/SiC composite by emanation thermal analysis method. In order to get more information about the micro- and nanostructure of the composites a combination with small angle scattering and ETA results is planned. The influence of the He implantation on the composites and fibers will be studied to understand the swelling and tensile strength effect of the materials.
