SlideCasting 2.0: "Community of Learners"

01.02.2008 - 30.09.2008
Forschungsförderungsprojekt
Based on the personal experience of the applicant with mass lectures in the context of computer science curricula at the Vienna University of Technology, this project aims to overcome recognized problems. The central approach is to reverse the burden of the large number of participants. By using of new communication and interaction forms the next generation of students are already familiar with, a broader discourse on the content of courses will be initiated. A software platform will be designed and developed where, in a first step, students with a notebook (at the TU already 5-10% of listeners identified) can comment during the lecture in real-time. After the end of the lecture, the "SlideCast" is available to all participants of the course. The annotations can be in the form of further comments, questions, discussions, case studies, cross-links within the lectures and links to the Internet, but also proposed changes or exercises (from the teachers) are appropriate. Furthermore, annotations can be changed, extended and deleted, where as in a wiki all previous versions are retained. In addition, it should be possible to collaborate with other students who are currently part of the same process, via online chat. Such a platform could transform the anonymous mass of students into a community of learners. Because the teachers can participate, such a system could potentially enable new forms of learning and teaching. In addition, teachers can evaluate the activities in such a systemin order to redesign their own lectures. The project is proposed with a runtime of 9 month, with two iterations to be implemented. A prototype implementation will be used and evaluated in a course. This is followed by an adaptation of the system towards a second test and evaluation phase.
