Spatial Development in Austrian Urban Regions: Need for Action and Governance Potentials

06.06.2007 - 31.10.2008
Auftragsforschungsprojekt
Starting point of the project are dispersing spatial structures in the surrounding areas of many cities (also medium and small-sized cities) in Austria, the predicted extension of boundaries of urban regions with an increasing mobility (¿the-100-miles-city¿) and the growing together of agglomerations, which are basically shaped by urban features. These processes have fundamental consequences for the whole region: migration of firms and population, intensive land use, traffic problems, increasing commuting, etc. In the project - after analysing the extent of these developments for some selected regions ex post and for the future - the need for action on the part of public authorities will be identified. Central goal of the project is discussing and evaluating new ways for governing urban regions, particularly having a closer look at European examples (Germany, Switzerland). Mainly responsibilities and rooms for manoeuvre of all involved actors should be revealed and recognized.
