Assessment of Potential Damage and Risk Exposure caused by Natural Hazards with Earth Observation

In Austria many residential areas, infrastructure, commercial and industrial buildings are potentially put at risk by natural catastrophes (e.g. floods, avalanches, storms) due to their highly exposed locations, particularly in mountainous areas. Information about the risk exposure is fundamental e.g. for the establishment of protection or early-warning systems. The project EO-NatHaz has the objective to explore and exploit the utility of novel remote sensing techniques - on one hand for the assessment of potential damages and economic losses and on the other hand for the derivation of risk exposures due to natural hazards. The project is coordinated by the company GeoVille. The TU Wien is a scientific project partner and investigates if remotely sensed soil moisture and freeze/thaw data can support the assessment of risk exposure to floods, mudflow and other natural hazards.
