Barrier Properties of Polymer Films
01.06.2006 - 31.12.2011
Proprietary project
Develompment of a biaxial stretching tool Gas permeability is one of the most important properties of polymer films for use in packaging. In food packaging the barrier against O2 and CO2 strongly influences the keeping quality. Often it is needed also to tune the permeability to get defined rates of permeability. The application of polymer blends is a relative reasonable method for influencing the barrier properties. Thereby the developing blend morphology is the crucial parameter. It was shown that a lamellar morphology is advantageous. Biaxial stretching can induce such morphologies. To do that well defined a relative simple biaxial stretching device, which can be attached to a standard tensile testing machine and a temperature chamber have to be built. The project covers the construction and manufacturing of the stretching frame and and of the temperature chamber.
