Sewer Heat Exchangers, Monitoring of a Pilot Research Project
01.07.2006 - 30.11.2009
Assigned research project
At the newly built branch plant south of the Vienna Municipal Department 30 (MA 30) is performed a pilot project concerning energy use from wastewater heat. The energy is extracted from the waste water via a heat exchanger and subsequently it is used to generate basic coverage of a low-heating system and complete coverage of the cooling demand. In addition to this innovative heat pump system there was installed a conventional heating system using district heating energy, through which the individual rooms can be supplied with heat. Because of the newness of the heat exchanger in the sewer pipe there is carried out a "monitoring" of the plant from the Institute for Geotechnics, Research Center of Soil Engineering, Soil and Rock Mechanics of the Vienna University of Technology. Therefore, the MA 30 has installed several instruments (energy meter, temperature sensors, etc.). The data will be documented and consequently evaluated. In addition, investigations of the biofilm growth and its influence on the heat exchanger will be conducted.
