Messung des Effekts von Neutronenbestrahlung an Isolatoren und Supraleitern für das Upgrade des Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

14.11.2013 - 13.01.2015
Forschungsförderungsprojekt

A key objective of CERN is to exploit the Large Hadron Collider at its utmost performance,
including the upgrade necessary to increase its luminosity. This requires the development of
superconducting accelerator magnets (dipoles and quadrupoles) capable of tolerating radiation
exposure. The achievement of these high magnetic fields during the whole lifetime of LHC
Upgrade requires a precise knowledge of the variation of the mechanical and electrical properties
of the magnet materials as a function of the irradiation with high energy particles, in particular
neutrons and protons. Mechanical properties of insulating materials and the most relevant
properties of superconducting wires (both low TC and high TC) will be assessed before and after
neutron irradiation to test the suitability of these candidates for future accelerator magnets.
