The Next Generation Network (NGN) is the converged network that in future accomodates traditional fixed and mobile networks on the basis of the Internet Protocol (IP). As a result of experiences with IPv4 and requirements for an NGN, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) developed an appropriate successor of the current IP version, at first named IPng, nowadays well known as IPv6. In order to enable a seamless transition from IPv4 to IPv6, the IETF proposed and designed several techniques (including dual-stack, tunnelling, and translation). The predecessor-project N4 avaluated most of the existing IPv4/IPv6 transitioning techniques and summarized the results in recommendations for access as well as backbone transition(using a theoretical approach). This application oriented project should build up on the previously acquired IPv6 experience and knowledge, considering perfomance, scalability and applicability of IPv6 and its transitioning techniques in the use case of SIP based VoIP.
