Set-up optimization of prostate irradiation by treatment planning comparison

Radiotherapy of malignant tumours implies CT diagnostics, which can be supplemented by other diagnostic procedures. After outlining of the target and organs at risk, an individual treatment plan is done in order to provide the described dose to the tumour while sparing the surrounding normal tissue and organs at risk as good as possible. This project is not only focused on optimal treatment planning, but also on an optimal set up procedure of prostate patients while being treated with tele-therapy. With the new ultrasound system (BAT-US) soft tissue images can be superimposed with the outlining of the treatment planning procedure in order to optimize the patient setup before individual treatment. Deviations computed by the BAT-US system can help to calculate treatment outcome under individual conditions. Tumour control probabilities and normal tissue complication probabilities can give additional information on the outcome of a treatment procedure. Approximately 25 prostate patients are planned not only with photons, but also with protons under realistic, but individual conditions.
