DroneLink is a research-driven project focused on the development of a (tethered) drone-based communication system utilizing directional radio (microwave) antennas to establish independent, high-bandwidth data links over long distances, particularly in emergency or crisis situations. At its core, the system uses autonomously stabilized drones as mobile relay platforms, equipped with commercially available 5 GHz and 60 GHz directional antennas. The project aims to systematically compare these technologies: while 60 GHz enables significantly higher data rates (1 Gpbs), the 5 GHz band offers greater resilience to misalignment and atmospheric interference. The resulting infrastructure operates entirely independent of existing networks or licensed mobile communication, and is designed as an open-source platform that can be easily extended and integrated into existing projects (e.g., PX4, MAVLink).
