Automatic orientation of historical aerial oblique images of Austria

Research funding project

For Austria a unique collection of historical aerial oblique images, ”Österreich aus der Luft”, exists. Consisting of images taken between 1920 and 1930 from an airplane, large parts of Austria were captured for the very first time. To incorporate these images into spatial analysis, the precise position and orientation of each image has to be known. While this can be done manually for each image individually, whole collections such as ”Österreich in der Luft” have not been approached yet due to the required amount of work. Accordingly, with the development of an automatic approach the entire collection could be make accessible for subsequent applications. Hence, within AUTIQUE we will develop an robust approach to estimate the unknown position and orientation of thousands of historical oblique images precisely. As for Vienna a unique set of historical reference datasets, which are required for the development of the automatic approach, we first concentrate on images showing Vienna before extending the approach for all remaining images. We believe that these images properly visualised can be an important tool to demonstrate the vast changes our environment has undergone. Hence, within AUTIQUE we will further develop innovative tools to integrate these images in workshops with schools and generally for communicating with the public. Accordingly, AUTIQUE will have a great impact both scientifically and socially.
