Smart City Profiles

11.06.2012 - 10.06.2013
Assigned research project

Comprehensive and comparable profiles focusing on climate and energy issues will be
developed in close collaboration with the KLIEN and the respective cities and urban regions
for a maximum of 20 selected smart cities across Austria, which is complemented by a
visualization of the profiles and the relevant drivers and indicators. By means of an initial
stakeholder workshop, city requirements, central questions and priority areas shall be
defined in collaboration with the smart cities and urban regions and based on a proposal
developed by the project team, which will then feed into the indicators and profiles. The
elaborated smart city profiles will be based on existing data (e.g. City Barometer 2010 and
2011, survey on climate protection activities of members of the Austrian Association of Cities
and Towns, Austrian Emissions Inventory, official statistical data) and frequently used
sustainability indicators (e.g. carbon footprint, energy consumption etc.). These profiles shall
account for common characteristics of Austrian cities and urban regions and thus allow for
their comprehensive applicability to a wide range of cities, an evaluation of trends and a
better interpretation and comparison of the different profiles. The profiles and specific final
results, as well as relevant interdependencies and dynamics will be prepared and illustrated
in a preliminary way by UBA with software tools like CONSIDEO, Gapminder or GISconnected
databases, and then graphically optimized and adapted by a design agency in
coordination with the project partners and the KLI.EN in order to ensure an attractive layout
and public comprehensibility.
