Development of a system for the arrangement of carpooling options in combination with a public transportation information system, using mobile phones and various navigational systems

01.08.2004 - 31.05.2006
Research funding project
In the pilot project an innovative carpooling arrangement system will be developed and tested, which is based on the newest development of informational and navigational systems. The object of this well conceived project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of such an undertaking and to develop a perfected product. During the initial testing period, the system should stand the test and its functionality should be proved. Moreover, first experience with the market will be collected. This experience and intensive contacts with experts at home and abroad will allow us to collect marketing data to estimate the potential for such a system in Europe and the US. It is another target to increase awareness and to make the carpooling system known, in order to improve the conditions for carpooling in Austria. In contrast to existing systems, which help arrange carpooling, ¿matching¿ takes place on the basis of geo-information by means of passageway searches. Multimodal travel information systems will be integrated into the carpooling arrangement system. Thus the user will automatically be informed about possible routes- and schedule information when searching for possible carpooling options. The search information can be made available on the internet as well as to mobile phones. A special user interface will be provided and the information about the specific geographic location is being considered. Another innovation will be the integration into the navigational system. With the so-called Off Board Navigation , which is offered by Smart and A-Class as extra equipment, carpool wishes as well as navigational information can be transmitted at the same time. The system is based on standard components from the fields of logistics and navigational information. The multiple features that are being developed for this pilot program will lead to a gigantic leap in the user friendliness of carpooling arrangements and will lead to a significant widening of carpooling with non-family members. The project will be developed in the course of a year and will be tested over a six month period.
