Feuerlastinduziertes Abplatzverhalten von Beton in Hohlraumbauten
01.07.2004 - 31.12.2008
Assigned research project
Subsurface infrastructure such as tunnels, garages, and storage facilities are mainly protected by means of plates and shells made of reinforced concrete (RC). The fire load resulting from e.g. traffic accidents in tunnels and explosives may cause, as it was observed in recent years, severe damage of the RC structure. Spalling of concrete layers results in a reduction of the element thickness by up to 30 cm and, additionally, in severe damage of the remaining (non-spalled) part of the structural member by thermal degradation. As regards detonation of explosives, characterized by an even higher fire load as observed during tunnel fires, an increased amount of damage is expected, further reducing the safety of subsurface infrastructure. In the course of this research project, experimental studies are performed on different types of concrete under fire loading. Hereby, the spalling behavior is investigated and main parameters controlling spalling are identified. Based on the insight gained from the experimental results, the safety of existing infrastructures will be assessed and the fire design of new projects will be improved. The final goal of this research project is the optimization of subsurface infrastructure with respect to structural safety under fire attack as regards both the structural design and the performance of the employed materials.
