Towards automized, scale independent, high resolution, high temporal dynamic vegetation water content monitoring 4.0

01.05.2017 - 30.11.2018
Forschungsförderungsprojekt
Information markets in the sectors of agriculture, forestry, water and environmental management require quantitative measurements of vegetation water content and biomass, all of which are not currently available as operational services on required scales (Global, Regional, Field). The aim of the project will be to analyse the capacities of Sentinel-1 cross-polarized (CR) data for monitoring vegetation water content, its relationship to Sentinel-2 based vegetation indices, ASCAT VOD and in situ measurements of vegetation condition (height, water content, biomass) through an experimental setup along a rigorous scientific plan. The proposed activities should lead to a breakthrough by establishing the scientific evidences required for multi-scale indices of vegetation water content, thus provide for a highly valuable opportunity for the involved scientific and industrial partners. From a commercial perspective, the advances reached by the proposed activities could be a game changer: it could provide the validated indices required for the future development of vegetation water monitoring services at field scale, world-wide, independent of weather condition and ground information, at market acceptable costs. Importantly, we plan to exploit the results by
investigating the feasibility for market applicability, in particular targeting the requirements of the agricultural, water and environmental management sectors worldwide.
