Toxico-genomics of Fusarium mycotoxin action in plant and human health: new approaches for safer foods

The main goals of this interdisciplinary project is to use the tools of functional genomics to obtain insights into the mechanisms of pathogenicity of the fungus Fusarium graminearum , which produces mycotoxins contaminating agricultural products, and into the mechanisms of Fusarium resistance in wheat, maize and the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana . The secondary metabolome of the fungus will be characterized and the role of particular compounds in virulence will be investigated. The toxicological effects of Fusarium metabolites and detoxification reactions in human and plant cells will be studied. The knowledge obtained will be applicable for development of new control strategies for Fusarium , and especially for breeding important crop plants with increased resistance, which prevent the accumulation of Fusarium mycotoxins in food and animal feed.
