For this Study the highly resolved simulation model (HiREPS) of the Austrian and the German power system is used to study the variability of the power prices and the need for daily, weekly, monthly and yearly electricity storage capacity and reserve power under the assumption of an increasing share of renewable power. Based on these results, the different storage technologies are assessed using macro- and microeconomic cost-benefit analysis and ecobalances. Furthermore, the technically and economically feasible pumped hydro power storage potential in Austria is compared with the future need for electricity storage. Costs and benefits of electricity storage technologies will be compared with various alternatives for enhanced integration of renewable energy.
