Prof. Dr. Ioannis Giannopoulos ist Professor für Geoinformation am Department für Geodäsie und Geoinformation. Er besitzt sowohl einen Bachelor- als auch einen Masterabschluss in Informatik mit Spezialisierung auf Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) und Mensch-Computer-Interaktion (HCI). Im Jahr 2016 promovierte er im Bereich Geoinformation an der ETH Zürich, wo er für seine herausragende Dissertation mit dem renommierten ETH Culmann-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde.
Seine Forschung konzentriert sich auf die Schnittstelle von Geospatial Data Science, Geospatial Algorithms, Mobility, Location Based Services (LBS), GeoAI, Mixed Environments und Urban Computing. Durch die Kombination rechnergestützter Methoden mit geographischem Fachwissen treibt Prof. Dr. Giannopoulos die Entwicklung der Geospatial Data Science voran, um reale Herausforderungen in Bezug auf Bewegung, Raumverhalten und intelligente Umgebungen zu adressieren.
Seine Forschungsgruppe zählt zu den Pionieren im Bereich Outdoor Augmented Reality (AR) und hat Systeme entwickelt, die geografisches Bewusstsein in AR-Erlebnisse integrieren – ein bedeutender Beitrag zur Interaktion zwischen digitalen und physischen Räumen im mobilen und urbanen Kontext.
Prof. Dr. Giannopoulos hat zahlreiche Forschungsinitiativen geleitet, sowohl industrienahe als auch öffentlich geförderte, und bewegt sich dabei häufig an der Schnittstelle zwischen Wissenschaft und Anwendung. Durch diese Kooperationen ist es ihm gelungen, komplexe georäumliche Fragestellungen in innovative, durch Data Science und KI gestützte Lösungen zu überführen.
Er betreut weiterhin ein dynamisches Team von Nachwuchsforschenden und leitet Projekte, die die Grenzen der Geospatial Data Science und ihrer Anwendungen im Bereich der urbanen Digitalisierung und Mobilität erweitern. Seine Arbeit steht für ein starkes interdisziplinäres Engagement und für die aktive Mitgestaltung der Zukunft der Geoinformationsforschung.
Prof. Dr. Ioannis Giannopoulos is a Professor for Geoinformation at the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation.
