Prof. Hermann Hofbauer ist Universitätsprofessor an der Technischen Universität Wien. Er war Vorstand des Institutes für Verfahrenstechnik, Umwelttechnik und Technische Biowissen­schaften (1997-2000 und 2010 - 2014) ist Leiter des Forschungsbereiches "Chemische Verfahrenstechnik und Energietechnik" und des akkreditierten 'Prüflabors für Feuerungsanlagen'. Seit 2004 bekleidet er außerdem das Amt des Studiendekans für Verfahrenstechnik.Prof. Hofbauer besitzt 25 Jahre Erfahrung auf dem Gebiet der thermischen Biomassenutzung und ist Koordinator mehrerer EU und nationaler Projekte auf diesem Gebiet. Er ist Key Researcher beim Kompetenzzentrum "BIOENERGY 2020+" und Vorsitzender des Strategy Boards. Bereits über 15 Jahre lang ist Prof. Hofbauer österreichscher Vertreter bei der IEA-Bioenergy. Seit 1990 hält er Vorlesungen an der Technischen Universität Wien über "Brennstofftechnologie", "Energietechnik", "Auslegung von Verbrennungsanlagen", "Wirbel­schichttechnik", "Thermische Biomassenutzung" und neuerdings auch "Einfüh­rung in die Verfahrenstechnik". Er ist Autor und Co-Autor von mehr als 300 wissenschaft­lichen Veröffent­lichungen und diesen Gebieten.

Prof. Hofbauer received a Dipl.Ing. in Mechanical Engineering and Dr. techn. in Chemical Engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. He was appointed as full professor for Chemical Engineering at the Vienna University of Technology in 1997. He was head of the Institute of Chemical Engineering (1997-2000 and 2010-2014) he is head of the research division for "Chemical Process Engineering and Energy Technology". Since 2004 he is also dean for study affairs for Chemical Engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. Since 1990 he is lecturing for example "Fuel Technology", "Energy Technology", "Fluidized Bed Technology", "Basic Engineering of Combustion Systems", and "Thermal Biomass Utilisation" at the Vienna University of Technology.Prof. Hofbauer has got more than 30 years of experience in thermal biomass utilization and he has been coordinator of numerous European as well as national projects in this field. Especially in the field of biomass gasification he has developed a novel technology which is well known as the Güssing lighthouse project. He is key researcher in the competence center "BIOENERGY 2020+ " Area Gasification" and head of the Strategy Board of this competence center. More than 20 years he has been Austrian representative in IEA-BIOENERGY and he was active in several tasks (e.g. combustion, gasification) as well in the Executive Committee. He is author or co-author of a large number of scientific publications and he is frequently invited for keynote lectures in these fields.
