Architecture is understood as an international language. The perception and interpretation o architecture and built environment is indispensably depended from the cultural background of the viewer. Within the frame of this lecture there is a possibility provided to deal with different cultures. The task is to raise the awareness that a building only can be understood and designed in combination with its environment and its history.

Since 2001 the cultural landscape around Lake Neusiedl is registered on the list of the World Heritage Sites. In this course, the importance of the UNESCO World Heritage List will be explained. The focus is laid on the discussion about the impact of the label World Heritage has on the region and in particular to the architecture. Away from the controversial discussion about the World heritage Site Vienna the importance of the outstanding universal value, authenticity and integrity will be highlighted in the course. On this basis, the aim is to study the compatibility of preservation of architectural traditions and the development of new architectural language with a corresponding local character.
Course is combined with the course 251.098 EX Excursion to Selected Objects in Architecture and Urbanism and can optional be combined with 251.169 VU Recording and presentation of architecture .
