Properties

  • Semester hours: 3.0
  • Credits: 4.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Aim of course

Learning and understanding of electric and magnetic properties of materials by means of theoretical models. Interpretation and understanding of mechanical, magnatic, and electrical properties with respect to the materials structure. Acquiring basic knowledge and accessing orders of magnitude of various material properties.

Subject of course

The Kick-off meeting for the current laboratory course will be on Tue. Oct. 03, 2017, at 10:15 in lecture hall EI-9. (For the dates of the respective lectures, most of which are held in German, please refer to the German version of this page).

Introductory lecture: Overview and organizational arrangements
Lecture  2. Atomic nucleus and orbits
Lecture  3. Interaction forces
Lecture  5. Crystals
Lecture  6. Metallic materials
Lecture  9. Mechanical properties of materials
Lecture 10. Thermal materials properties
Lecture 12. Electrical properties of metalls
Lecture 14. Magnetic properties of materials I
Lecture 14. Magnetic properties of meterials II
Lecture 14. Nanomagnetism and magnetic nanostructures
Lecture 13. Electrical properties of insulators I
Lecture 13.  Electrical properties of insulators II

The lecture numbers refer to the book "G. Fasching: Materials for Electrical Engineering; (in German) Springer-Verlag, 2006".
Laboratory exercises: For consolidating the knowledge base on "Dielectric materials" and "Magnetic materials" laboratory courses take place in the laboratory room CD0104 and are held in two blocks each on one afternoon. Participation and finishing of this laboratory exercise (to an extent of 1 hour per week in one semester) is possible either in summer or winter semester. It consists of two blocks "Dielectrics" and "Magnetics" each of which lasts one afternoon.

Additional information

The lecture of the VU "Werkstoffe" is offered in winter semesters. In order to avoid concisenesses the laboratory exercise is offered in both, winter and summer semesters. It is urgently and strictly reccomended to participate at the introductory meeting at the beginning of each semester in person. The base of the course is the book: "G. Fasching: Materials for Electrical Engineering, (in German) Springer-Verlag, as well as laboratory scripts which you can download after selecting "Communication". The exercises will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in room CD0104.

Examination modalities

Written and oral examination. A positive certificate presupposes the following yields:

1) A sufficient qualification of the laboratory course consiting of two blocks "Dielectrics" and "Magnetics" each of which has to be passed successfully (positive) itself whereby the qualification points are provided for a written test at the beginning of the course, the activity during the course, and for the laboratory report. Pleasae hand over printed reports within 14 days to the tutor(s) and please send them additionally as PDF-file with the group number in the name by eMail to: mw-labor@mail.isas.tuwien.ac.at.
The laboratory course is passed successfully after all parts of it have been evaluated positively.
2) Besides the laboratory course the examination of the main lecture (hold during summer semester only) must be successful. It consists of a written and an oral examination part. In the regular case the examination is in Germain language. In case you would prefer an examination in English please contact early enough the coordinator: Prof. J. Nicolics (Administrator: Ronald Glatz <ronald.glatz@tuwien.ac.at>).
