329.023 Pressure Equipment - Modell and Admissiblity Analysis
This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2025S, VU, 3.0h, 3.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 3.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise
  • Format: Blended Learning

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • determine which types of analyses are required for Design-by-Analysis of pressure equipment.
  • perform Design-by-Analysis calculations including the necessary Finite Element calculations.
  • evaluate the results of the analyses according to appropriate standards.

Subject of course

  • Finite Element analysis and ANSYS
  • Geometry of model, linear elastic analysis, stress distribution
  • Thermal analysis, thermal stress
  • Fatigue analysis
  • Global plastic deformation check
  • Shake down analysis
  • Stability (buckling) analysis

Teaching methods

Each lecture starts with a presentation, where the required basics for the exercises are developed. Afterwards, an example is carried out within the group. A similar example has to be analysed as homework. The institute's equipment is available for finite element calculations, although most students use their own PCs (laptops). The software used (ANSYS) is made available to students free of charge by ANSYS Inc. and can be downloaded from the Internet.

Additional information

Attendance:

In principle, there are written documents for all parts of the lecture, which means that absence at individual dates is not a problem. Attendance at the lectures is important, however, as discussion and exercises form an essential part of the course.

As in the previous year, the course takes place in the first half of the summer semester. There are 7 dates, one lecture and one exercise session each, with one date/week as a target.

Summer semester 2024:

Corresponding dates have been reserved in the lecture theatre and CAD room (see dates). If only a few participants register, an individual time allocation is possible.

Organisation and exchange of information will take place via the eLearning system (TUWEL).

Examination modalities

For taking the exam, 6 exercises have to be performed and the results shown to the instructors. The grading is based on the oral exam.

The partial assessments to be completed are the six homework examples and an oral examination.

The homework examples are completed by the student between the individual courses and should be discussed with the lecturer in the context of the following course (at the latest before the oral examination). If a homework example cannot be assessed positively, it can be corrected, in which case the example will be discussed again with the lecturer.

In order to take the oral examination, all homework examples must be completed successfully. If the oral examination is negative, it is possible to retake it during the course (without issuing a negative certificate). Examination dates are agreed with the course instructor.

In order to pass the course, all homework examples and the oral examination must be passed. For the assessment of the course, the homework is weighted at 25% and the oral examination at 75%.

Attendance at the on-site courses is strongly recommended.
