Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

  • devise a concept, including design, sensor selection and system parameter estimation, to develop a laboratory experiment for a basic structural mechanics problem.
  • conduct experiments on existing test rigs and process measurement data.
  • produce analytical and computational reference solutions using commercial software, assess the correctness of obtained results and interpret them from an engineering perspective.
  • compare computational with experimental results and identify limitations, design flaws and potential fixes.
  • summarise and interpret experimental results in a concise yet complete written report.

Subject of course

Design and hands-on execution of physical experiments, interpretation of measurements, comparison with computed results and assessment of imperfections and potential design flaws for specific laboratory tests in the field of structural mechanics.
The actual experiments considered depend on the current focus of the research unit and may be of an academic or applied nature.

Teaching methods

For a given problem of structural mechanics, the students are tasked with the development of a design-concept for a physical experiment.
These concepts are evaluated and refined against the available test rigs in the laboratory.
Experiments and data acquisition are carried out in a series of supervised and unsupervised laboratory sessions.
In the laboratory report, the experimental investigation is summarised and contrasted with a computational reference solution.
