This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2023W, VO, 2.0h, 3.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VO Lecture
  • Format: Presence

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to

  • comprehend the nature of turbulent flows and
  • the necessary mathematical tools in their essence and
  • to apply those in the course of their further studies (CFD course UE 322.057) and in engineering practice. In particular, the students are trained to get to the bottom of turbulence closures commonly adopted in modern computational fluid dynamics applied to engineering problems.

Subject of course

Governing equations for mass/momentum/energy transport, brief introduction in laminar-turbulent transition, statistical description of turbulent flows, scales in turbulent flows, mean-flow equations, shear flows (pipe and channel flows, attached boundary layers, free shear layers).

Teaching methods

Presentation at the blackboard, skeleton script, uploading handouts covering specific topics.

Mode of examination

Written and oral

Additional information

A script will be prepared in the course of the lectures.
