Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply methods and indicators of spatial analysis for describing, explaning and modelling spatial structures and developments in a way that the results could be applied in real planning processes.

Subject of course

  • topic 1: spatial indicators

    • sources of spatial data and taxonomies
    • relative and absolute indicators
    • static and dynamic indicators
    • spatial aggregation
    • indexing
    • classiication of spatial entities

topic 2: spatial concentration and disparities

    • statistical distribution
    • cumulative curve, Lorenz curve, Gini-coeffizient
    • coeffizients of specialisation and localisation

    topic 3: accessibility

    • introduction in SPSS Statistics
    • graph theory
    • shortest-distance calculation (OD-matrices)
    • accessibilities of facilities in different transport modes
    • accessibilitiy indicators (isochrones, gravitaty-based potentials,…)

    topic 4: spatial interaktions

    • gravitaty model
    • analysis of commuter flows
    • modal split

    topic 5: spatial interrelations

    • hypothesising
    • cross tables
    • Chi-Quadrat-Test
    • co-variance
    • correlation
    • linear regression

    topic 6: Bevölkerungsprognosen

    • modelling, simulation and prognosis
    • linear and exponential extrapolation
    • cohort models
    • scenarios

Teaching methods

In presentation videos the different methods of spatial analysis are explained (also with practical examples) and discussed with regard to their applicability in practice. Based on these inputs, the students apply these methods for an existing region and integrate all results in a written report.
