Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to develop problem-oriented and future-oriented strategies and designs for communities. Among other topics, students will focus on future requirements regarding climate resilience as well as societal and technological change.

Subject of course

"Reimagining rural downtowns – Zellerndorf" provides a framework for architecture and spatial planning students to work together in teams to develop urban designs, concepts for public space and transformation strategies for rural centres.

The project deals with the planning challenges of the municipality of Zellerndorf in Lower Austria in a practical way.

Sustainable concepts and designs are developed in order to improve the effects and changes caused by climate change, technological and demographic dynamics (influx, vacancies, mobility transition) and the quality of life in rural communities. The interplay of numerous environmental factors (development direction of the municipality, regional vs. municipal view of problems, lack of interdisciplinary exchange, different utilisation requirements) results in complex problem areas for the municipality. It is important to raise awareness of cross-thematic and cross-scale design and planning approaches.

In mixed teams, the students develop urban planning designs for one of three selected locations (way station, event centre, old yard area) that respond to specific challenges and are embedded in an overarching development strategy for the municipality of Zellerndorf. They will also test the extent to which AI-supported visualisation methods are suitable for communicating urban development plans.

Teaching methods

Interdisciplinary project work in mixed teams (spatial planning and development, architecture); Urban design, urban strategies and visualisation (optional with AI support)
