After successful completion of the course, students are able to recognise the importance of "planning phase 0" as a basis and catalyst for design processes and to successfully apply corresponding artistic and experimental methods for participation processes, especially in school space development, and to work out an artistic design on the basis of this.Through subject-specific inputs from art, architecture and pedagogy as well as their own artistic-scientific research, students have acquired knowledge about relevant parameters of (school) interior design and their influence on the atmosphere and teaching and learning performance in educational spaces. They have a comprehensive understanding of the issues that can arise in the (re)design of school spaces and are able to apply and present these findings in design terms.
The course is part of the FFG-funded project "BiB-Lab / Innovation Lab for Educational Spaces in Motion" (www.bib-lab.at) of the Arbeitsraum Bildung of the Vienna University of Technology (www.arbeitsraumbildung.at). In the course of the three-year research project, innovative design concepts for existing schools are developed and tested in participation and networking processes. This semester we are cooperating with the ICV - International Campus Vienna in Oberlaa to transform existing spaces that are to be adapted for secondary education into atmospheric learning and living spaces. With the help of guest lecturer Beate Weyland from the Institute of Educational Sciences at the Free University of Bolzano, playful, artistic-experimental and participatory approaches to school space development and redesign will be developed with the involvement of ICV stakeholders and tested 1:1 as test settings on site in order to derive and develop further design approaches. Depending on the funds available, the design proposals developed in this artistic project will be implemented at a later date.
Input lectures, site visits, participatory school observations, best practice research, conception/implementation of and participation in participatory idea workshops and 1:1 test settings, discussion and reflection meetings, design elaboration, interim and final presentation
