The Spotlight

In-Between

In the summer semester 2010 the Institute for Art and Design 2641 began a 3-year-cooperation with the housing company SEG Stadterneuerungs- und Eigentumswohnungsgesellschaft m.b.H Vienna. The students develop projects with light for different sites and situations of housing projects of the SEG in Vienna with a realization of 1-2 projects each year. They are offered the unique possibility to experience the various phases from concept to detailed planning up to the realization of the project. This artistic design project specifically addresses students pushing forward unconventional methods and ideas of thinking and planning.

In-Between is a cooperation of the Institute for Art and Design 2641 with the Institute of Housing and Design and the SEG Vienna.

Teaching Content

Site for project realization: 19th district, Vienna,  Hackenbergweg 5

Architect: Peter Lorenz

The design process will address the following aspects: Evaluation of various gradings between public and private; the relationship of light and scale; parking areas can develop out of miniature spaces; enforced parcelling of space; the law for allotment gardens and its amendment (and the perversion through maximizing profit); investigating the interaction of light and space, light and nature, light as medium for artistic processes, to broaden or accept the constraints of housing, density of light, interaction of housing and nature; poetry and vanishing, obtrusion and absence; light dimmers, spotlights, light stimulus, light poetry and utopia.

Research will be considered as part of the design process.  Engagement in the current planning process will be possible in order to involve light beyond function.

Teaching Goal

The project needs to be conceived and developed in a way that it can be realized, yet adding unexpected qualities. The meaning of light in art and architecture will be analyzed and investigated. Does light mainly serve to make visible or to offer security, or are there further qualities like creating an atmosphere, attention, or provocation? At the end of the semester a jury will select the project to be realized permanently.

Realization of the project: Oct.2011

Starting: Thursday 10.03.2011  10:00 Schutzhaus Hackenberg, Am Neustiftblick 2, 1190 Wien
