After successful completion of the course, students are able to work out complex design tasks from the field of architecture and urban design independently, systematically and with an original, contemporary design approach based on a precise architectural language. They have the competence to recognize fields of action in the urban context and to develop corresponding urban planning solutions. The students acquire the competence to research topic-related basics on their own responsibility. They acquire the competence to create design concepts, to present them comprehensively in the form of draft and detailed plans and to present them convincingly.
In the design 'Along the Sea', we deal with territorial urbanization, large-scale infrastructures and their site-specific issues along Adriatic coastal landscapes - using the example of Split and Durrës. By means of in-depth analyses, the studio searches for historical layers and the connections between the core and the hinterland. Following a jointly developed matrix in the form of a cartographic representation of situations and patterns, concrete scenarios and urban planning designs are developed at various scales.
Split and Durrës are places with exceptional characteristics that are closely related to the country's history. The areas along railway and harbor infrastructure, and their connection to the city and its surrounding, form the spatial focus of this studios and offer excellent conditions for establishing the "new" in the urban context. This "new", be it building typological alternatives, changes in forms of mobility, urban structural interventions or selective interventions, are contributions to the discussion in the process of consolidating an urbanity characterised by social upheaval. Together with students from local universities, we develop new paths and strategies for a sustainable urban transformation.
This studio is an 'Integrative design studio for Master's students (individual work!) in hybrid mode. Supervision appointments will mainly take place in face-to-face mode, international co-supervision will be hybrid or online. An excursion with an on-site workshop is planned as part of the design programme to consolidate the course content.
The studio is part of a cooperation with partner universities as follows: architectural faculties of Pristina, Sarajevo, Split and Tirana university and Skopje American College
The results will be presented in a publication and exhibitio in Pristina, Sarajevo, Skopje, Split and Tirana/Durrës in winter 2024/25. It is possible to participate in the design of the dissemination work in wintersemester 2024/25.
