This modul understands multi scalar modeling approach as main method. Accordingly, the students will be exposed to systems modelling approaches to establish interdisciplinary chains from early design to fabrication.Along the course, Design and Optimization of Structures will be approached from different perspectives starting from parametric structural design, simulation and optimization towards computational fabrication technologies such as robotic construction, cnc fabrication, 3d Printing as well as application of AR/VR in fabrication. Through the understanding of the fabrication tools and their limitations and constraints, the students will learn to establish feedback loops, that incorporate information on fabrication in their digital design models.
Design usually follows a linear path from early conceptual developments to execution and fabrication. The digitalization of the design process enables the integration of simulation tools to the earlier stages of design, increasing the understanding of the designers on the structural behavior and design performance from early on. Consequently, the designers can easily access interdisciplinary knowledge and incorporate this in their design. Through this integration a multi scalar approach to design emerges. In this multi scalar workflow, different aspects involving structural, environmental performance as well as fabrication constraints are considered in the initial phase of the design process.
This modul investigates this digital chain in order to motivate the students develop an interdisciplinary design thinking from design to production. Consequently, the students will learn to develop holistic design methods constructing feedback loops in between different stages of design process. Along the modul, advancedsimulation and optimization methods will be introduced to students to construct an interface between materialization and design. Along the modul cutting edge technologies in fabrication and design will beinvestigated to provide the students with a broad range of tools. The theoretical courses will provide a critical understanding of these techniques to teach to students the correct applications. These courses will support thedesign studio 1:1 Design & Build; where the students will be applying their developed skills directly in the 1:1fabrication project.
The general aim of the modul together with the Design & Build course is to establish a design laboratory, where the students will be exposed to scientific thinking in design through digital and analog experimentation techniques.
